The dark-topped nanaimo bars are named after the city of Nanaimo in British Columbia, Canada.

Nanaimo bars consist of three distinct layers: a base made from a mixture of graham cracker crumbs, cocoa powder, shredded coconut, and nuts (usually almonds or walnuts), a creamy custard-flavored icing in the middle, and a top layer of chocolate ganache.
