Ggiata was founded in 2020 by three longtime friends from Montclair, New Jersey — Noah Holton-Raphael, Max Bahramipour, and Jack Biebel — who wanted to bring the warmth and tradition of East Coast Italian delis to LA. They started as a ghost kitchen during the pandemic and opened their first physical location on Melrose in March 2021.

The deli took its name as a shortened play on the Italian word “passeggiata,” which describes a leisurely evening stroll that families often take to catch up with neighbors. The idea fit the concept: a casual, neighborhood gathering spot built around good sandwiches. They simply clipped “passeggiata” down to the punchier “Ggiata.”
