Prince Bernard on Steel Drums

Sweet Caribbean Music for Entertainment from Trinidad and Tobago ~

Prince Bernard in Larchmont Village on March 7, 2010

I first caught Prince Bernard playing the steel drums in Larchmont Village back in 2007. He’s lost weight since then! But you can still find him usually on Friday or Saturday on the east side of the street between Beverly Boulevard and First. It depends on the weather.

He’s come out with about a dozen CDs, even a Christmas one. You can buy them when you see him in Larchmont or on his website princebernardentertainment.com

Had a nice chat with him on video and snapped a few pics with my old iPhone, but the light wasn’t good. Prince Bernard was born on the island of Tobago and has been playing the steel drums for 40 years. He sings, composes and writes his own music. He first visited the United States in 1993 and kept coming back, finally settling here permanently in 1996. He says he first played in Larchmont about seven years ago.

I had referred to him as a street musician, which was really a big mistake on my part. He’s a professional musician who can do solo gigs as well as gather together a group to play at different venues.
